Development and Commissioning
The Battleship Texas is the only surviving battleship to have served in both World War 1 and
World War II, and now serves a historical monument to all those that have served on it. The Texas
as built as a result of a congressional act in 1910 authorizing President Woodrow Wilson to
construct 2 first-class battleships. The keel of the ship was laid in 1911 and the ship was
commissioned on March 12, 1914, and quickly put into service. The Battleship Texas is credited
with the introduction and innovation of advances in gunnery, aviation and radar and was the most
advanced ship of its time. The Texas saw action in both world wars and was decommissioned on
April 21, 1948.
